Circa 1913
The dominant characteristic
of the architecture of Iroquois Avenue Christ Lutheran is
clearly Gothic, but it is a typically eclectic building of
the early twentieth century with influences from the Arts &
Crafts Movement.
The design and stained glass
windows are a direct descendant of this Movement that
flourished in Detroit between 1886 and 1906. The Movement
advocated the return to the handcrafted work of the artist.
the origins of the Movement are traced backed to England
when the Pre-Raphaelites banded together in 1848 with the
express goal of improving the condition of the arts in that
country.
The
windows in Iroquois Christ Lutheran were designed and
crafted expressly in Italy with these goals in mind. The
windows you will see displayed are the 13 original
designs installed in 1913. They have been restored in
the same manner in which they were originally designed.
More about the biblical representation of these windows
can be found under the tab:
Church Windows.
