From "Growing Healthy Kids 2006 annual report"
Coordinator, Kirstin Tannas

"When are we going to to make squash pie?" Tyler asked frequently. "I LOVE squash pie!" This is not the kind of question that is usually asked of a young boy, or of an adult either. But at GHK, this is just the kind of question that we love to hear!

Tyler who is now 11 years old, had been in GHK the previous year. That Fall, the kids made pies from butternut squash that they had grown in the garden at EarthWorks. At first the kids were quite uncertain about the activity. First of all, many of them had not eaten butternut squash before, and secondly, the thought of squash in a pie just didn't sound too appealing. When the kids tasted the pies at the end of the session they were very pleasantly surprised. So much so that they asked for a second piece of pie, and then a third. Tyler was particularly fond of the pie and we found him asking over and over, "when are we going to make squash pie again?"  After being in GHK for 3½ years, Tyler now 11 has jubilantly moved into the Youth Farm Stand group. We are proud of the consistency and dedication of the youth which we know to be key to developing healthy life skills.

Program Overview:

1. Encourage physical fitness.
2. Encourage good nutrition choices by teaching through word and action.
3. Encourage environmentally responsible living by making the interdependence of humans and the natural world tangible through gardening and cooking.

GHK 2006 Season: 20 children enrolled, 38 sessions, 250 lbs of food harvested, 20 meals prepared in the kitchen, 6 field trips.
